Preview – Majesty 2: Kingmaker

24 03 2010

“Once more the lands of Ardania are under threat and need a saviour. For those unaware Majesty 2: Kingmaker expands on Majesty 2 by introducing new monsters and eight new missions, with five “Advanced” missions and three “Expert” missions. The “Return of Grum-Gog” features more varied mission objectives then the original Majesty 2 campaign, the first mission placing you in a desperate battle to survive until reinforcements can arrive.

The new “Return of Grum-Gog” campaign is not for the fainthearted and can offer quite the challenge. Each mission can be randomized to provide that little bit more of a challenge and replay value, or as others call it “replayability”. After hundreds of years lying in wait the Goblins have returned to the civilized provinces of Ardania. Do not misjudge the Goblins to be feeble for they can and will make a mockery of you given the chance. During their mysterious absence the goblins must have been mastering the martial arts for they can be more than a match for your heroes.

Love it or loath it the gameplay from Majesty 2 remains intact, with tweaks and improvements from the patches released so far. The basic goals remain the same; you must build a successful kingdom full of heroes, which you must influence indirectly via reward flags to get your dirty work done. With the recent addition of the ingame shop you can even download new content, such as missions, to get more enjoyment out of your game. While you may have to pay for some downloadable content there is also free DLC available, so make sure to grab your free new Ice Wizard hero.

Once more the wonderful George Ledoux returns to offer his voice acting skills to the Majesty franchise. After spending close to a decade with the recognisable voice of George Ledoux as the Royal Advisor somehow I doubt I could feel the same about Majesty 2 without him. Since despite all the changes made from Majesty to Majesty 2 it is those classic Majesty sounds and moments which help the game feel like it belongs.

Overall the “Return of Grum-Gog” campaign offers an enjoyable experience providing an average of eight, or more, hours of enjoyment. For those wanting an expanded Majesty 2 experience at a decent price then the Kingmaker expansion might just be what you are looking for.”
